25) Do you name your skulls? Do you have a system to name them? Favorite name?

Not always but some of them are just so unique that they have to have names. Like Phineas Gage the horse skull! He suffered from severe head trauma which was in the process of healing up when he died.

Or Sin Dientes* the old coyote skull. (Spanish for without teeth)

Thor the Rottweiler

image

Smaug the Alligator (missing his teeth sadly but he’s still rad).

And some skulls come to me already named! Like Billy Bob the buffalo bull that lived on a farm here in TN until he became sick after eating some trash and died.

Sarah and Yellow Boy, a friend of mine’s Carolina Dogs.

Yogi, Papoose, Spooktastic, and Zan, two miniature horses and two llamas that all lived on a farm in Georgia. Yogi is the mini horse that I’ve rambled about endlessly on here before. He was kicked in the head by a draft horse after another mini bit the draft horse. Yogi was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and was killed instantly. Papoose was a seventeen year old mini mare that died of old age. Spooktastic was a twelve year old male llama that also died of natural causes and Zan was a seven month old male that became ill and died.

7) What is your favorite skull in your collection?

This is the hardest question on this list, haha. I can’t pick just one so here’s a few favs.

Capybara skull. I found him on ebay a few years ago in a lot of other skulls for a super low buy it now price. It belonged to a biologist that lived in Florida and after he passed away many of his belongings were sold in an online estate sale. I love the coloration on this skull. Only one side has that brown coloring so I’m betting that he laid out on a riverbank for a while before being picked up.

My Jacob’s Rams! Love these dudes.

Old male rottweiler, bulldog, and the skull from a monster black male wolf. That skull is right at a foot long. The wolf was trapped in Alaska and the skull was going to be thrown away until I inquired about it. I love getting to salvage skulls like that.

Hank the Tank (draft horse) and Yogi the Miniature Horse.

It’s very hard to not post more because pretty much all of my skulls are favorites for various reasons. They each have their own story. :)

Well I certainly splurged last week, haha.

Antemortem vs. perimortem injuries.

The skull from the standard size horse suffered a severe injury some time before its death (possibly a kick from another horse). The bone fractures all show signs of new bone growth.

The miniature horse skull came from an animal that was kicked in the head by a draft horse, which killed it instantly. The fractures show no sign of healing.

Thought these guys made for an interesting comparison!
